RxGibbs new EP out Feb 21 - Free track

I'm very glad of this new trend in EDM - bringing things down a couple notches, shutting off the wobble, losing the expectation for a "drop" a getting back to the business of enjoying music.  I hesitate to don this genre with the four letter word "c-h-i-l-l." I like to think of this branch of EDM to be more so contemplative, but I suppose that takes too long to say (contemplative-wave doesn't have the best ring to it). RxGibbs has a new EP dropping Feb. 21st, glittering, aquatic and all together beautiful.

Sweet Berry Wine! Flying Lotus Hot Track

Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, is a music producer coming out of Cali. He's been producing since 2006 and has apparently done some work for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, although he is uncredited. He has released 3 albums, a trunk full of EP's, and has quite a few collaborations under his belt as well. Most notably, in my opinion, was the track he did with Radiohead's Thom Yorke. If you have Thom Yorke calling you to make some music, you're obviously doing something right. The proof is in the putting that Lotus knows how to make some tracks.

Hopefully most of you are already familiar with Adult Swim's Tim and Eric Awesome Show and their character Dr. Steve Brule's real talk health tips. Flying Lotus sampled one of the good doctor's most memorable moments and worked it into a hot track with a hip-hop beat.

T.E.E.D. is a prototype of what I'm hoping the future face of electronic music may look like.  TEED gives great care in as much his process as he does the product, and it shows. Every track saturated with innovative progressions, intricate drumming, and beautiful melodies; all the while, overstepping the borders of style and offending the minds of those too fixed to the limitations of genre and the cultures therein. This mini-documentary is beautifully done. Orlando Higginbottom (TEED) has much to say about his process and vision for EDM's future ventures. The vid also has a sneak peek at his newest single 'Tapes & Money.' Its a beautiful and sincere view of the process of EDM production.  Not what you'd generally think of as a video about EDM - not brassy, bold and eternally obnoxious. Gorgeous and quiet, the production navigates the viewer through a side door of sorts, inviting us into a whole new and disarming perspective of Dance culture. Definitely worth eleven minutes of your time.

'Drive' Gets Retro with Kavinsky

Last weekend I saw Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, and Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston. The film left me not knowing how I really felt about it, which is a good thing. It has a very simple plot with solid acting and a lot of long takes; an artsy movie for sure, as is Refn's custom having directed Bronson and Valhalla Rising. Refn's films are typically pretty violent, but Drive raised the bar in many ways with some of the scenes actually making the entire theater gasp. Sawed-offs, straight razors, and boot heels is all I have to say. My hope is that Drive will be for Gosling what The Departed was for DiCaprio, and that he leaves behind his chick-flick poster child past in search of more original and gritty roles like this. But I digress. What really made Drive cool was it's soundtrack. Composed and compiled by Cliff Martinez, it gives the movie that retro-80's feel and it complements the scenes perfectly. The intro credits roll with Gosling cruising around L.A. at night with Kavinsky's "Nightcall" setting the tone for how the movie would play out. Warmed my soul to no end and instantly elevated the film to Bad A status. With Daft Punk doing the score for Tron: Legacy and Knife Party's dubstep remix being featured in a trailer for Lucas' Red Tails, we may be seeing the beginnings of a new norm for Hollywood soundtracks. While this is exciting for one part of me, the other part is crying in a corner hoping it isn't true.

Diplo, Skrillex, A-Trak on Billboard Mag's Cover

There's always an inner conflict when I see this type of coverage. It is definitely blowing my mind,  though, make no mistake.

If you turn on any pop radio station one will notice  rather quickly that 90% of the pop hits being forced to consumers are house tracks, pretty much. Granted this is a more recent phenomena which has taken years to gain moment (Assuming, one of the greater moves towards House and EDM breaking into mainstream in the contemporary era, probably began with Madonna's "Music" released in 2000). The quality of these recent palatable tunes is debatable, but all the elements, bpm, buid-ups, swells, and frilly thingies are blurting at the correct times. Yup, that's House! Its a dumb question (or at least a late one) to ask whether or not the states are ready for this kind of sound. I've often postulated as to why its taken so long for EDM to go public, considering House (and the majority of branching genres), Disco and the Rave scene were all birthed in the states. hmm.
